LA Market by Kerry Simon

This multi-course meal at LA Market (in the JW Marriott downtown) was a winner! It all started with the above mezze platter- warm pita bread, fresh olives, herbed feta, tabbouleh, muhammara, babaganoush, and classic chickpea hummus. I was an especially big fan of the muhammara- it was nutty, spicy, and vegetable-y all in one! And the tabbouleh had a great mixture of grains and veggies.
Oh and did I mention that we got some extra bread with the pita platter?! Warm salty sourdough rolls, pretzel rolls, and breadsticks. Yes, please!
We also got a shrimp appetizer. Blue prawns with jalapeno jelly. We're talking biiig prawns.
I was in a vegetable-over-meat mood, so I got the indian vegetable curry. It's hard to tell from this picture, but it was a big hearty bowl of veggies and rice! It had eggplant, tomatoes, zucchini, squash, onions and roasted potatoes covered in spicy indian goodness and served over aromatic basmati rice. It was all topped off with sweet chutney, herbs, and warm chewy naan. Amazing combo.
Justin got the filet mignon with polenta and grilled veggies. My dish was definitely bigger than his, and he wasn't afraid to go after some naan and basmati rice (though he carefully avoided all eggplant). At this point we were very full (we'd polished off that bread basket, pita, and naan!) so we opted for a light dessert.
It was pressed watermelon with kiwi, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, basil sorbet, and sweet meringue cookies. Sooo refreshing. It's hard to tell from the picture, but these were the biggest blackberries I've ever seen. Ever. I've got to figure out how to make that basil sorbet :) Thanks LA Market for a happy palate and full tummy!

Chicken Tikka Masala

Yesterday marked my first blog post in a very long time (it's been a crazy month!). Yesterday also marked the maiden voyage of our new slow cooker.
I used it to make a healthier version of chicken tikka masala, and it was gooood.
It all started with the following ingredients!
-2 lbs chicken breasts
-2 tbsp garam masala
-1/2 tsp cumin
-1/2 tsp coriander
-1 tbsp kosher salt
-1 tbsp minced garlic
-1 yellow onion chopped
-1 tbsp dark brown sugar
-1 28oz can crushed tomatoes (I actually used diced tomatoes and mashed them with a potato masher to 'crush' them)
I had everything except garam masala which (surprisingly) wasn't at Trader Joe's, so I got it at World Market.
I threw all the ingredients in the new slow cooker.
And set the slow cooker for 4 hours on high.
To get this lovely mix!  The final ingredient I added was a 5oz container of greek yogurt.
I paired it with steamed barley and spinach.
And enjoyed some very tender and flavorful chicken!
I loved the way it just flaked apart! Definitely making this again :)
